The Rolling Dog Ranch Animal Sanctuary rescues and shelters animals who are disabled, old, sick or injured. These are the animals who are the least likely to be adopted and the most likely to be euthanized in traditional shelters.
Steve Smith and Alayne Marker founded the sanctuary in 2000 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization known as a private operating foundation. In its first four years, the sanctuary has grown to over 70 animals, including blind dogs, deaf dogs, blind cats, invalid cats, blind horses, and dogs with significant medical problems.
Although most of the animals have disabilities, none of them consider themselves handicapped. They just want to enjoy life, and that's what they get to do here.
The sanctuary also takes in farm animals rescued from abandonment or neglect and placed with us by the Humane Society of the U.S., Farm Sanctuary, and local courts.
The ranch covers 160 acres of grassland and sagebrush east of Ovando. Facilities include two barns, four animal cottages, and three large animal sheds.
The sanctuary is supported entirely by private contributions. Donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.
The ranch welcomes visitors on weekends, although visits are by appointment only and need to be scheduled in advance. Please call to arrange a visit and get directions. Because Steve and Alayne both work full-time for a living, they cannot accommodate drop-in or unscheduled visits.
