Howard Copenhaver

For those who know him as a wilderness outfitter, a horseman, or a warm and incomparable story teller, it seems as though Howard Copenhaver, like the wilderness country that serves as the setting for many of his stories, has always been part of what is known as Montana. No one is more qualified to write books on outfitting in the Bob Marshall Wilderness than Howard Copenhaver. He has been a wilderness outfitter and guide in Montana's famous Bob Marshall Wilderness for more than half a century. He's seen it all, done it all and is recognized as a master story teller. Now he's shared many of the most gripping tales of his wilderness outfitting experience in four books; "They Left Their Tracks", "More Tracks", "Copenhaver Country", and "Mule Tracks: The Last of the Story".

In "They Left Their Tracks", Howard recollects sixty years as a Wilderness Outfitter; tales of a hard working man who must deal with clients from all walks of life in unpredictable outdoor situations. Sometimes humorous and sometimes tragic his stories highlight the adventure of those with whom he shared the wilderness.

"More Tracks - 78 Years of Mountains, People & Happiness" Howard Copenhaver shares more vivid stories of life telling about growing up in Montana wild country, of people whose lives pulsed in harmony with the wilderness and its wildlife. He takes us into the era of growing up, and living, in a time and place in Western Montana that spanned the era from pioneer days to the present. This is, in essence, a very personal history of a man whose rich life helped shape our understanding of an awesome place known as Montana.

The book "Copenhaver Country" Howard expands his story telling to include his life's trail; along the Montana Centennial Train enroute to the 1964 World's Fair, to his wife of over 50 years, Margaret. We once again taste the rich humor and studied observations of a man whose insights spring not only from the twinkle of his eye but the disciplined commitment to family and friends and a land and country he truly loves.

In 2001 he has written his fourth, and he insists, last, book on his experiences in the mountains of Montana, and a few other places his life has taken him. "Mule Tracks: The Last of the Story" is about episodes, some hilarious and others serious, involving his love affair with those beasts of dynamic personalities -- mules - including selecting them, training them, packing them, and sharing numerous wilderness adventures with these sometimes contrary but always marvelous and dependable creatures. Reading these books makes you feel like you're sitting around the flickering light of a campfire in the mountains with him, living each adventure. He paints a vivid picture with words. If you dream of living the life of an outdoorsman or of traveling in the high country, read one of Howard's Books.

You can purchase one of Howard’s books by contacting the Blackfoot Commercial Company at 406-793-5555 or writing to The BCC, Box 89, Ovando, MT 59854.

We unfortunately lost Howard in early 2004 and he will be profoundly missed by all.
